Homelessness is a Housing Problem

New research confirms what we’re seeing in communities: homelessness in Canada is a housing problem, and it’s getting worse.

There’s a clear link between rising homelessness and shrinking affordability. That means Canadians experiencing or on the edge of homelessness need more affordable housing and a transformed Canada Housing Benefit so they can afford to rent what’s out there while new housing gets built.

We’re calling on the federal government to act now. We have five recommendations for the next national housing strategy , and we won’t stop until we get each one.

If enough of us keep the pressure upwe can make sure that the next national housing strategy leaves no one behind.

Local media can help you spread the word in your community. The Letters to the Editor page shows up in media briefings that politicians receive and helps build the pressure to act. The more letters we send, the more that local Members of Parliament will hear that homelessness is top of mind for the people who elected them.

With Members of Parliament returning to Ottawa soon, we need to keep the momentum going. Can you send a letter to the editor of your local newspaper or online news outlet to let them know that Canadians are waiting on a national housing strategy and fall budget that prioritizes homelessness?

Let’s make our government step up and turn the tide of homelessness. Because Canadians can’t wait any longer, and we shouldn’t have to.
